Identity is rarely a straight line; more often, it is a complex web woven across different geographies, languages, and cultures. For children growing up in the diaspora, navigating this terrain can feel like walking a tightrope between the heritage of their parents and the daily reality of their immediate surroundings. 

It is easy to view identity as something fixed—a rigid set of rules tied strictly to a specific birthplace. But true cultural identity is an elastic thread. It can stretch across oceans, navigate new accents, and adapt to changing landscapes without ever snapping.

Teaching language to the younger generation is our way of strengthening that thread. When a child learns to speak their mother tongue, they aren’t just learning a vocabulary list; they are unlocking a portal to their ancestry. They are gaining the ability to comfort a grandparent, understand the rhythm of traditional poetry, and view the world through an intersectional lens.

We must give our youth both roots and wings. The roots anchor them, providing a steady sense of self-worth and belonging in a chaotic world. The wings give them the confidence to fly into the global space, secure in the knowledge of exactly who they are. Preserving our language across borders is not a rejection of the modern world; it is a declaration that our history deserves a seat at the table.
